Rory Anne Rory Anne was born on August 29, 2002. With her older sister and brother, she made our family complete. The wellness check up at two weeks was the first suggestion something could be less than perfect. Dr. Grady Huckaby of Irvine, Ca. took the time needed to examine her eyes. As he detected no red reflection in the right eye, he recommended we see a pediatric ophthalmologist who diagnosed Rory with bilateral Rb. It is impossible to describe the feeling when learning your child is born with cancer but there have been numerous blessings in the journey we have had. One of highest prominence is learning of Dr. Linn Murphree. His knowledge and care has created what we consider a miracle. His staff, visiting nurses, friends, family, and many prayer groups have helped to make this all bearable. Rory Anne began treatment at five weeks of age. She went to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles every three weeks for six rounds of chemotherapy. She lost her beautiful baby hair, looked terrible at times, but through it all, she continued to progress into what is now an incredible two year old. She continues to be checked regularly for future growth. The American Cancer Society when learning of Rory, chose her as the honorary survivor at the Irvine Relay Walk for Life in June 2004. With her golden curly hair and winning smile, she proved to be the perfect example of what can happen when there is early detection of Rb and proper treatment. At the present time, Rory has good sight in her left eye and some peripheral vision in the right. She seems destined to be able to manage with this, but as she was bilateral, we are gravely concerned she is susceptible to secondary cancer as she continues to grow. We believe her life has a distinct purpose and our family has chosen to devote our efforts in promoting Proteomics for Rb. Rory is our inspiration. We urge you to learn of this breakthrough technology and support our cause. |
