Use of Funds:

RBI is a volunteer organization comprised of physicians, friends and parents of children afflicted with retinoblastoma. All contributions are used to support early detection and screening programs among parents and primary care health professionals, to provide information about retinoblastoma to parents and patient families, and to support research on safer, more effective treatments for retinoblastoma.

Programs and Services:

RBI supports a variety of educational and professional programs designed to encourage the early awareness, diagnosis and treatment of retinoblastoma.

  • Continuing Medical Education of Primary Care Physicians on the Need for Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Retinoblastoma
RBI is working with the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop practice guidelines to assure early detection of this disease. RBI provides Web-based training programs to educate doctors about this rare disease.
  • Educating Parents and the Public About the Early Signs of Retinoblastoma
RBI promotes early awareness of the disease by educating parents and the public through medical publications, presentations, media outreach and its Web site, www.retinoblastoma.net.
  • Sponsoring New Legislation in the State of California
RBI worked tirelessly with California legislators on California Assembly Bill 2185 which established the New Born Eye Screening Program. This program was a great step in providing for early detection of potentially fatal eye diseases including retinoblastoma and glaucoma. The bill passed in February 2000 and requires that all infants undergo dilated pupil examination by a neonatal nurse, a primary care physician or other authorized healthcare provider during the neonatal period. State bills such as these are not easily passed, but are key in saving vision and lives. To pass AB 2185, RBI worked closely with assembly members to create awareness of and interest in the life-saving advantages of early eye exams.
  • Research
RBI aids medical research by seeking improved treatment, management and prevention of retinoblastoma and its other possible secondary cancers.
  • Patient and Family Counseling Services
RBI supports patient and family counseling services for families with a child that has retinoblastoma.
